Chapter President 2021-2022

Hello VI ASHRAE Members, Students and everyone else:

I hope all is well.

To start off this letter is going to sound like a “rinse and repeat letter” from last years President Letter.

We acknowledge with respect the Lekwungen peoples on whose traditional territory that VI ASHRAE is part of and the Songhees, Esquimalt and WSÁNEĆ peoples whose historical relationships with the land continue to this day.

As members of ASHRAE or participants in ASHRAE committees, we pledge to act with honesty, fairness, courtesy, competence, integrity and respect for others in our conduct. During this meeting and in all other ASHRAE interactions.  Please see ASHRAE Code of Ethics 1.140.001.1 for a complete version of the above statement.

Thank you everyone for all of your efforts for the 2020 – 2021 year.  It was fun and challenging to coordinate activities with our VI ASHRAE Chapter. Having said that this year will be very similar but different.   Unlike last year I (we) are hoping our technical talks will be some kind of face to face version. Keep an eye out on our web site for updates. We will continue to do our best to have speakers talk or present on a wide variety of HVAC&R topics. If you have some topics that you would like to hear about or even present please feel free to contact myself or one of our Board Members.

As noted above big Thank You to all of our Board of Governors (BoG), see below. There is about 100+ members in our strong little enthusiastic chapter.  Of those ASHRAE Member about 14 have volunteered their time to help out in about dozen different committees on our board.   A new one to our group was around Sustainability, they are working closely with Mustard Seed, stay tuned for progress announcements.  This year we have a Refrigeration Chair, we are looking forward to his cool ideas (pun intended).  Similar to last a few students are helping us out with our web page updates.   A big thank you goes out to all of our presenters and the board members behind the scenes which make it all possible. ASHRAE is a volunteer based association and without the hours that the board members put in the program would not be a success. (I am stealing from Gavin Stewart again, https://www.ashraemanitoba.ca/about-us/presidents-message/). Thank you to everyone for your ideas, time and energy. We have about a 50/50 split between dedicated returning BoG and fresh new ideas people. Everyone pulled together last year, 2021-21, to have a successful year.  I believe our membership grew, we had some interesting speakers and a very good end of year Virtual Chapter Regional Conference (CRC).   The 2022 CRC will be in Regina in May 4 to 7, https://www.ashrae.org/conferences/chapters-regional-conferences-crcs.

This is my second “Presidents Message” it was fun to put together last year and just as much fun to put together this year.  With our web page updates it seemed like a good idea to keep this letter going.    As I mentioned last year I am no wordsmith I am looking at best practices from other Region XI “Presidents Messages”.  I completely agree that our goals should be to continue to make membership as valuable, and rewarding as possible by providing our members with current industry knowledge, discussing local issues as well as networking opportunities. Our Chapter Technology Transfer Committee (CTTC) has a pretty good schedule of dinner meetings topics presented by various experts and distinguished lecturers.   At this point we are planning to do face to face meetings, but ready to switch back to virtual if it is a good idea.

Similar to our province/city/community and our chapter is strengthened by the diversity of the individuals that represent it. Our active membership is made up of people from many different industry sectors and backgrounds and is as diverse as our province itself.  I encourage all our chapter members to take time to chat with fellow members, board members and committee chairs at our upcoming meetings and enjoy the many benefits of being part of the VI ASHRAE Chapter. (Thank you Gavin McCallum, I stole your words, http://www.ashraebc.com/president).

I also look forward to the connection ideas with our Young Engineers of ASHRAE (YEA), Student Activities and outside organizations like EGBC, VICA or VIES to partner up like we have done in the past. These events have been well attended and I am sure in the virtual world it will be similar.

I suspect there will be multiple virtual meeting happening at various Region XI Chapters as well as other ASHRAE Regions.  You might recall I am on the mailing list for meeting reminders from Toronto and Ottawa.  I would encourage you to look on the web for these type of activities.  Even a lot of ASHRAE Society training or networking activates are being promoted to be online. Take full advantage of this.

If you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact me.  Please feel free to reach out to myself or any of the board members with questions, suggestions or recommendations for new recruits. I’m excited to get the season rolling and look forward to engaging all of you in serving our Chapter. (Thank you Adrian Beaudin, I stole these words from you, https://www.ashraenac.org/newsletterarticles/2019/9/4/adrian-beaudin-ashrae-nac-presidents-message-2019-2020 and Chris Roberson, http://ie-ashrae.org/).

In the words and ideas of Dr. Henry, Dr. Tam and pretty much everybody. Stay safe, be good to each other and have fun.
