Eric is the President of ASHRAE Vancouver Island (VI) for the 2024/2025 chapter year. He joined ASHRAE VI in 2021 as the Government Affairs (GA) Chair and as part of the Refrigeration Committee. As GA Chair, he met with government officials including the Director of Codes and Standards to share ASHRAE’s position statements on decarbonization and indoor air quality. He attended two Chapter Regional Conferences (CRC) as the Alternate in 2022 and 2023, and then a third time as the Delegate in 2024. Last chapter year, Eric was the Treasurer and Vice President. Professionally, Eric was a Sales Engineer in the commercial HVAC industry for 5 years before recently switching careers and joining BC Transit as a Fleet Project Engineer. He is a born and raised Victorian, currently living in Langford with his wife and dog.

Karl Barnett is the President Elect and Webmaster of ASHRAE Vancouver Island (VI) for the 2024/2025 chapter year. He joined ASHRAE VI in 2023 as the Webmaster. He attended one Chapter Regional Conference (CRC) as the Alternate in 2024. Professionally, Karl is a Controls and Service Sales Engineer at Trane Canada. Karl is passionate about HVAC systems and advancing building technology towards a healthier and more sustainable future.

Chapter Technology Transfer Committee (CTTC)

Chair: Zachary Moffett

Zachary Moffett joined the Vancouver Island ASHRAE chapter in 2022 and is currently serving as the Chair of the Chapter Technology Transfer Committee (CTTC). As the CTTC Chair, Zachary finds his position fulfilling as it helps him bring new knowledge to the industry and stay connected. In his professional life, he works as a sales engineer for Trane Canada and has over 10 years of experience in the HVAC industry and background in mechanical engineering.

Outside of his professional life, Zachary enjoys hobbies such as sailing, reading and enjoying Victoria’s vibrant culture and community. Recently, he has embraced the new challenge of having a family, finding joy and fulfillment in this new chapter of his life.

Calvin has been a VI ASHRAE Member since 2008 and has helped in Student Activities, CTTC, RP, Chapter Vice and President, Webmaster, Trade Show, Training Sessions and more.  Calvin is a Process/Chemical Engineer with 30+ years experience in the Academic, Agriculture, Municipal Government, Petrochemical, Petroleum, Pharmaceutical and Pulp & Paper sectors, with national experience and expertise in Manufacturing Process, Process Control, successfully & safely supervised 5 to 25 staff in a non-unionized and unionized environment. Calvin is currently with the University of Victoria, Engineering and Computer Science Co-op & Career Services as a Co-op Coordinator.

Diversity, Equity, and inclusion

Chair: Sara Nikoofard (Sustainability CHAIR)

Sara has a PhD in mechanical engineering with focus on high performance, net zero energy buildings. She has been a member of ASHRAE from 2017 and has been actively volunteering with ASHRAE Vancouver Island Chapter from 2019. Sara has been chair of Sustainability and Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) for the past few years. She Believes that building a sustainable future is interconnected with promoting a diverse, equitable and inclusive environment.  As an immigrant woman in engineering, Sara has experienced some of the struggles that new immigrants and women in engineering face. By volunteering as DEI chair in ASHRAE VI and one of the executive committee member with Engineers and Geoscientists BC’s EDIT&R Team, she strives to inspire and help young engineers to work in a fair and equitable environment.   

Sara believes the diversity brings more knowledge and help with designing more sustainable future. Learning from others in designing, improving and regulating the built environment is one of the focus of her practice.

I look forward to being part of the ASHRAE community and support its members.

Originally from the East Coast, Amber joined the Vancouver Island Chapter of ASHRAE in summer 2023 as Chair of the Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Committee. She has been working in the Commercial Insurance sector as a Broker since 2008, and now works with Wilson. M Beck Insurance Services Inc. in Victoria with a focus on Construction and Engineering firms. Amber is also an active member of the Vancouver Island Construction Association and Secretary for their Women in Construction Committee. Interests include bird watching, kayaking and traveling the world (also while bird watching and kayaking).

Refrigeration

Chair: Logan Bakker

Logan joined the Vancouver Island ASHRAE Chapter in 2020 and has participated in many of the Chapter’s activities since. After all the support and enrichment that ASHRAE has provided to him, Logan wanted to give back to this amazing community and he is currently acting as the Refrigeration Chair of the Chapter’s Board of Governors. He is a graduate of the University of Victoria’s Mechanical Engineering program and his training has taken him through many fields, including the pulp & paper industry, public transportation, mass manufacturing and mathematical consulting.

Currently, Logan is the project engineer for Accent Refrigeration Systems, an industrial refrigeration design-build firm that specializes in refrigeration and heat recovery systems for ice rinks. His work has allowed him to design and construct refrigeration systems all over the world that utilize both natural and synthetic refrigerants. When he’s not trekking across the globe for work, Logan enjoys cycling, board games and attempting to recreate the foods he found during his travels.
